Team Member Spotlight: Porshia Taylor - WesleyLife accent

June 1, 2021 | By

Porshia, a Service Coordinator in the Network Support Center in Johnston, soon will begin a new job with WesleyLife: Public Health Case Manager. The new role will make good use of her home-health background – she became a CNA at 17, while she was still in high school -- and her sociology degree. It’s also proof, for her, that she chose the right employer.

“There’s tons of room here for growth and development, and that was a necessity for me,” Porshia says. “I learned when I was hired that WesleyLife does a lot of promoting from within. I have goals, and there so many opportunities here to help me meet them. There are no limits to what I can do if I work hard and make sure my skills are strong.”

Porshia says she was especially gratified to learn that WesleyLife’s leaders have an open-door policy – and genuinely want to help their teams succeed. She credits Janet Simpson, Regional Vice President of Network Operations, for helping her identify her career path.

“Janet was willing to talk to me from the very beginning about my background and my skills and where I want to go,” she says. “It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, I have to talk to this new employee.’ She was really interested and she really cared. She made me feel like I definitely had a future here.”

Porshia also identifies WesleyLife’s mission as a key to her happiness with the organization.

“We care about the people we serve; they’re not just a number,” she says. “We’re encouraged to do whatever we can to make sure they get what they need. I’ve worked for places where it hasn’t been that respectful. Here, you know you’re expected to do the right thing, and even go beyond that.”

As Porshia continues to plot her career path, she says she’s governed by a single question.

“I ask, ‘Where’s a need and how can I help?’” she says. : “You can’t go wrong if you’re willing to put yourself out there. As a team, we really care about each other and want to make things easier for one another. If I can help someone I work with, that makes my day better, too.”
